Hip Bursitis Back Pain
Hip bursitis back pain is one among the common types of back pains. The area of the upper outer thigh is exposed to pain due to hip bursitis. The lower back area also might experience the pain. Understanding bursa will help in understanding bursitis. The bursa is a sac filled with fluid that is designed to provide smooth motion between two surfaces that are uneven. The hip bursa is situated between the bony area of the outer hip and the tendon that traverses over this bony area. Upon inflammation of the bursa pain is caused when the tendon moves over the area. This tendon moves every time you take a step so the pain caused by this condition can be quite bothersome.
You may be wondering what exactly causes this condition. There are several possible causes for hip bursitis. One cause is injury. Sometimes, the condition happens when an individual falls with the brunt of the fall on their upper thigh area. Athletes are susceptible to bursitis not only because of potential injury but also because of the amount of running involved in various types of sports including soccer, football and track. Another potential trigger for bursitis is hip surgery. Some post-op patients develop this issue.
Treatment for bursitis and the pain that it causes is most often aimed towards reducing the inflammation associated with this issue. Your doctor will instruct you regarding the treatment options that are available to you. They may include one or more of the following: anti-inflammatory medication, ice to the affected area, cortisone injection, draining of the bursal sac and certain types of exercise. It may be necessary to try several different strategies before relief is found. With therapies like exercise relief may not be immediate but it may be longer lasting.
The good news is that it is rare for a patient to require surgery for hip bursitis back pain. In the few cases where surgical intervention is needed, the procedure is quite simple. The bursa itself is removed via a small incision. The surgery is most always done on an outpatient basis and recovery time is a matter of days. Called a bursectomy, this procedure is the last resort when other, less invasive therapies have failed.
